Between exhaustion and indecision, Doran's mind was a mess. He walked slowly to rejoin Ede, Rayne, and the new girl, trying to decide on the best course of action. They couldn't camp here for the night--even if no other monsters threatened them, the bloodbath was sure to draw all other manner of creatures. The human scavengers would probably not be far behind. Returning to the town they had departed from was almost as unattractive an option. That left only the choice to press on, but when even he felt physically, mentally, and emotionally drained, forcing Ede to keep moving was not something he was comfortable with.
Once everyone was gathered together, he spent a minute returning his travelpack and shield to his back, speaking to the young blonde.
"We were heading east, to a town about three days' journey, but Ede is in no condition to travel that far. Did you come from that direction? Are there any villages, farmhouses, or any place of shelter that you can think of nearby?"
Of course, he had questions, accusations, and/or mandates for each and every member of the party, excepting perhaps Ede, but he had no interest in extending the night any further. Until they were sheltered and rested, there was time for nothing but practicality.

"We were heading east, to a town about three days' journey, but Ede is in no condition to travel that far. Did you come from that direction? Are there any villages, farmhouses, or any place of shelter that you can think of nearby?"
Katrin nodded, then stood and tucked her halberd behind her back before she replied.
"There was an abandoned inn along the road. I stayed there for a few nights, while I was hunting for more food. It is quite the walk, but..."
She wrung her hands, looking unsure. "I understand that your lady-friend is injured... so I don't know if you want to spend the time walking..."
Rayne was speaking to Ede, and Doran was talking to the blonde girl.
With nothing to occupy her at the moment, she turned and took a few steps away from the rest of the group, pulling off the bloodied bandage around her neck. At this point, it wasn't doing much good, since it was already saturated.
"Safety in numbers" was certainly not safe. Not anymore. All it seemed to do was paint everyone in the group with the same target.
She contemplated sneaking away from them now, while they were occupied. They certainly wouldn't miss her presence; she still remembered what little she understood of Doran's comments to Isabella, which certainly irritated her.
She took another tentative step forward. There were advantages to leaving, yes, but the ways in which she could make use of this group far outweighed that...
Scarlette couldn't decide for sure. Perhaps at a later time -- when they arrived at Târgșor, maybe -- she could make her decision.

Ede smiled to herself as Rayne regained her composure and returned to bandaging her. It was interesting, seeing a self-proclaimed thief (or someone who could manage tasks that "needed a little less noticing" as she'd put it) wear such a convincingly caring face. Perhaps Ede just hadn't had adequate experience with thieves.
"So who is she and what's her story?"
Ede shook her head a little.
"I do not know. She spoke Doran's language, I am thinking."
Her mind was still a bit fuzzy, but she had thought this to be what she'd heard in her brief time alone with the blonde. She hesitated a moment more, then...
"Rayne. Thank you. ... For protecting me."
Despite Rayne claiming to have failed, the more important part was that she had wanted to. And, Ede was still alive, wasn't she? The young girl then turned to Doran, to express her gratitude to him as well, but he was engaged in conversation with the unknown girl. That left Scarlette, but when Ede glanced her way, she found the woman off in another world. With nothing more to do, except wait for Doran to decide their next course of action, Ede sat silently (anyone else was free to do as they pleased, but Ede would be following Doran).

"I do not know. She spoke Doran's language, I am thinking."
German. Wonder if she speaks French also. She could help translate. Rayne kept those thoughts to herself for the time being. She didn't want it to seem like she was trying to get out of her translating job. That was the main reason that they allowed her to tag along.
"Rayne. Thank you. ... For protecting me."
Rayne's jaw dropped. As far as she was concerned she didn't. Ede wasn't in perfect health.
"I tried my best."
She paused before continuing. She had already given this speech to Doran, but Ede was the one that allowed her to tag along so she deserved to know as well.
"I know that I'm just looked at like a lowly thief that can't be trusted..."
She trailed off again.
"but I you were the first person to be kind to me in a very long time. Most people just kick me to the side. Stealing from people that have too much is just a means to an end. I didn't want to be like this. I'm just good at it.... unfortunately."

The goliath shook his head. "We don't have any other choice, so the inn will do. As long as we can get there before morning, it's good enough."
He looked at Scarlette, and then at the blonde. "I want to spend at least a day there to allow Ede to recover her strength. Anyone that is in too much of a hurry... well, they'll just have to go their own way."
Doran interrupted Rayne's conversation to make use of her translation abilities. "Tell Ede that there's an abandoned inn that we can rest at for a day or two--if we keep walking, we should be able to make it by morning. If she feels like she can walk, I'll carry her pack. If not, I can carry her myself."

"I want to spend at least a day there to allow Ede to recover her strength. Anyone that is in too much of a hurry... well, they'll just have to go their own way."
Katrin glanced at Scarlette as well, wondering why Doran had looked her way, before she gave a single nod.
"That sounds all right to me. Since I am somewhat familiar with the area around there, I can be the one to hunt for food."
When he addressed Rayne, she stood by until he finished, then spoke again. "Does your lady-friend not understand our language? I figured it was only because she was hurt..."
Scarlette stood nearby, patiently waiting for whatever the group's decision would be. She caught a brief bit of Doran's statement to Rayne -- something about Ede, and an inn. There was no way they were going back to the town they just left. Not after what had happened tonight.
Her combat high had long since died down, but she was not tired in the least. Aching and bruised, perhaps, but not tired.
Regardless, she gingerly set herself onto the dirt, leaning back on her elbows. If they weren't ready to leave just yet, she could have at least a moment of peace.

"I know that I'm just looked at like a lowly thief that can't be trusted...but you were the first person to be kind to me in a very long time. Most people just kick me to the side..."
Ede couldn't recall being notably kind. Maybe Rayne was referring to the drink at the tavern? If her small action had been the first of its kind in some time for Rayne, she truly felt sad for the woman.
"No one is trusted so fast."
Ede replied in a blunt manner, probably entirely missing the image Rayne was attempting to create of herself. Such were the hidden obstacles for non-native speakers.
Doran then intruded upon the conversation. Ede watched him as he spoke to Rayne, as though she could miraculously begin to understand if only she paid close enough attention. Of course, nothing came of this, and she was forced to filter his words through Rayne.
...
Ede didn't like the thought of walking until morning, but it'd be embarrassing to allow herself to be carried while everyone else trudged on. With that thought planted in her mind, however, her body seemed to suddenly hurt all the worse in the hopes that she'd take up the offer.
She stood with the hint of a defiant look (though Doran had already turned back to the blonde girl), and tugged on the straps holding her pack, adjusting it against her back. Her left arm resisted the motion with a sharp stab of pain. While the rest of Ede's body was sore, this particular discomfort stood out. Ignoring it for the time being, she spoke to Rayne:
"I will walk. I will carry my bag."

Rayne turned to Doran.
"She's got it."
Rayne walked over to the fallen lizardman and pulled her two last daggers from the body of the creature. She wiped the blades on the ground to get most of the blood off and then sheathed them in their proper place on her belt. She then walked over to the destroyed cart. In the mass of destruction was a broken crossbow. She picked it up and looked at the group. Rayne dropped the crossbow back on the ground and dropped her head. On the plus side the crossbow bolts were still there. She picked those up and reattached them to her belt.
Rayne walked back over to her party.
"Alright I'm ready to go."
She then spoke to Ede
"You all set?"

Doran replied to the blonde's inquiry while Rayne spoke with Ede.
"No, she speaks some French, but her native language is one I'm unfamiliar with. I believe she comes from beyond the Arabic lands. Incidentally, I haven't heard your name yet. I am Doran of Oakbaum, though just Doran will suffice."
Before the girl could reply, Rayne returned. Doran watched as Ede hoisted her pack. If it were possible, this made him look even grumpier. "Troublesome girl..."
Still, arguing would only delay them further. He would be watching Ede closely, and at the first sign of her discomfort he would take the bag by force if he had to.
Facing the blonde once more, he motioned down the path. "Well then, I'll have you lead the way Fraulein..." His voice trailed off, once again inviting her to provide a name.

"Oh, my deepest apologies! My name is..."
She paused as Doran's expression turned a bit more irritated, then listened as he continued.
"Well then, I'll have you lead the way Fraulein..."
"Katrin." She said softly, yet politely. She smiled, then took a few steps forward before looking over at Scarlette.
"Madam, we're going to be moving soon..."
Scarlette's head snapped over in Katrin's direction, and she lazily stood, brushing the dirt from her pants.
It seemed that everyone was ready to move. Well, that was good at least. But were they walking all the way to their destination...? She hadn't paid attention to what Katrin and Doran were talking about (or rather, she couldn't understand them), so she was as clueless as could be.
