System # 1001-2
M Planet # Unclassified. Local name: Lengolus
The Lengali are an undiscovered species hailing from a currently-unexplored solar system within the Orion spur. The Lengali are (presumably) unique in that they have recently (within the last century) made contact with other warp-capable species, but the Lengali themselves have not been classified in the Galactic Free Database. To understand this omission, one must understand their history.
The Bringers
Millenia ago, the sentient species that occupied the solar system in which the Lengali now reside developed faster-than-light travel, and began to explore beyond their system. What the Bringers (the Lengali name for them--their own name is lost to time) found was that their galactic neighborhood was a very quiet place. Humanoid species abounded in neighboring systems, yet all were primitive peoples. In centuries of exploration, they never found another spacefaring people (though they could explore only a tiny section of the galaxy). This eventually led some Bringers to believe themselves stewards of the galaxy, divinely appointed to watch over the other beings of the cosmos. This view was not to last.
The opposing philosophy among the Bringers was a more practical one. It did not try to explain their apparently accelerated technological evolution in divine terms. Rather, the pragmatists of this philosophy believed their superiority was simply a product of probability, and that there were likely other spacefaring races in more distant reaches of the galaxy. The Pragmatists (this being the name they adopted as their movement grew) also believed themselves a superior form of life to the primitive races, as deemed by the unguided hand of evolution. Eventually, Shepardism died out, and Pragmatism went from philosophical movement to governmental policy.
The Bringers were a physically feeble species, having evolved without predation or pollution for thousands of years. What they lacked in physical ability, they made up for in scientific ingenuity. The Bringers began collecting specimens from the primitive, but physically superior, lesser races. They utilized their extensive knowledge of genetic manipulation to create a slave race. Humanoids were collected from hundreds of solar systems and genetically altered to encourage subservience, and to allow them to breed among each other. The eventual result was a species with no visible morphological definition beyond "humanoid." A species made up of hundreds of alien races, unchanged externally from their donator species, and yet able to breed naturally only with other abductees--not with their original species. This is the origin of the Lengali.
History of the Lengali
Some three hundred years after the Lengali were created, the Bringers went extinct. Lengali legend tells of a terrible plague that swept through the Bringers without mercy, extinguishing them entirely in mere decades. The Lengali were untouched. With the Bringers gone, they were left with a planetary infrastructure that they had been operating for centuries, but no one to administer it.
The Lengali entered a brief dark age. Confusion led to turmoil, which led to violence. Miraculously, this fracturing was short-lived, and within a few generations the Lengali reunited as one people for the sake of mutual survival. It is widely believed that the Bringers' genetic manipulation imbued the Lengali with a natural tendency toward cooperation over conflict.
It has been thousands of years since the extinction of the Bringers, and the Lengali have long since come into their own. Having been bred as the workhorses of the Bringer empire, they had the knowledge of how to operate their forerunners' technology, and over generations have learned from it to become scientifically and technologically capable in their own right. The one area of Bringer technology that was not learned was eugenics. Genetic manipulation of any kind has been banned on Lengolus since the very beginning of Lengali society.
Lengali Physiology & Sociology
As has been previously stated, there is no external morphological definition of a Lengali. They may appear similar to any one of their original races, or as some hybrid between progenitor races.
Many remnants of the Lengali's origin as a slave race remain prevalent in both their biology and society. Newborn Lengali grow to full maturity in five years. Racism, at least that which is based on appearance, is an alien concept to the Lengali. Undoubtedly, their most notable societal peculiarity is their almost complete lack of "politeness," bred out of them by the Bringers, who wanted their slaves unable to deceive. Lengali society has evolved in many ways, but they still lack the "filter" that most races have between what they think and what they say. Some Lengali, specifically those who have recently embraced interstellar travel and have begun mingling with other species, have taught themselves when to say nothing at all. However, when a Lengali does speak, he or she will say exactly what he or she is thinking, unfiltered. Sarcasm, as a result, continues to perplex those Lengali who interact with other races.
