Preliminary layout. There are 2 different tabs of organization.
What I need from you:*Suggestions on better layout. *Suggestions on better numbering system.    We should tackle this early to make updating as painless as possible.*Suggestions on standardized formatting of language used in entries. Let me know if you have any issues downloading/accessing the file.--Dota Attachments:

Space cataloguing seems to be, to this day, a clusterfuck. The general gist for planet cataloguing is based on the star it orbits. Of course that gets complicated by the fact that astronomers keep making new fucking catalogues for the same shit, without chucking the old ones! *flips table*
Ahem. One of many cataloguing scenarios:
Lets say we have a group of stars, 12345. That group is then identified in order of brightness, so "a 12345, b 12345, c 12345" and so on.
For shits and giggles, a 12345 is binary, so we now have stars "a 12345 A and a 12345 B." If you want to go trinary, with a binary pair orbiting another distant star (the least terrifying scenario), you would go "a 12345 Aa, a 12345 Ab, and a 12345 B."
So lets say a 12345 Ab has five babies. Those planets would be categorized as "a 12345 Ab - b, c, d, e, and f," because for some shitty reason, astronomers decided that starting with "a" for a planet was "too confusing."

First of all you are amazing. This is awesome. Secondly, I think that all entries that are missing data for the suffix should be 00. For it to be standard it should always have something in it.
When I was doing my write up the first number for my planet was the galaxy and the second was the order from the sun. I also think that the letter should stand for something as well. Maybe the planetary class? Unless there was something else that you wanted to have there. With that being said Earth should be 5519-3M and Mars would be 5519-4K. This does leave the problem of only allowing 10000 solar systems. I don't know enough about astronomy to figure it out, but maybe a prefix for which 16th of the galaxy it is located in. So Earth would be something like 11-5519-3M.

I initially started with different numbering systems for different items, but with the database in place, we definitely need the numbering system to be all-encompassing. I think adding zeros to force planets to fit is a good idea, Trunks. I also like building the planetary class into the name and number from sun.
An issue we need to face is leaving enough room open to add new places to the appropriate range of numbers, but keeping the numbers close enough that maybe they'll somewhat categorize themselves. Lea, I like what you posted. If we assign leading numbers for stars, then build around with prefix/suffix for what it is we're identifying, we'll probably obtain far better results than what I currently have: my Species 9856 is in System 0800-8 on Planet 4013-J8. We probably don't want to assign brightness as a key identifier since that's relative to location and time period.
Kouhai dropped the idea of this database not being owned by any government, but more like a galactic wikipedia maintained by the community. I like that idea. Anyone else?

Considering Wikipedia is probably accessed more than the official-like encyclopedia, it makes sense. I like the idea.
I also agree with Lea's post as far as I can understand it. How would a certain named planet work? What about moons, especially moons that can sustain life? My D4, 6, and 8 planets I named as such because I envisioned them as a set of three sister planets damn near on the same orbital path near each other.

Forgot this discussion was here. I started addressing the naming conventions back over at the To Do list. I'm not sure there will be an elegant way to do this...
