The last thing that Scarlette remembered before the flash was a reptilian creature about to strike... And then a wail as long as loud as a banshee's wail, followed by that blinding light.
Now she was somewhere she couldn't identify, with a roaring headache and only her sword to comfort her.
Fantastic.
She rose tiredly to her feet, her body protesting the motion with sharp pains along her spine. Whatever had dropped her here, they certainly were not kind to her.
She gave the area a wary glance; she seemed to be on the edge of a forest. She could see a large grassland up past the last few trees, and there wasn't a building to be seen.
"Where the devil am I?" She murmured, her voice slightly hoarse, as she began to walk.

(The following is a bit of background info this whole thing. Directly after is the next part of my post for Scarlette, since she's not going to meet anyone in the middle of nowhere.)
It is the late 16th century. All over the world, warriors of great skill and talent are searching for a weapon capable of granting its wielder power beyond imagination. It goes by many names, among them "Sword of Salvation", but one thing remains clear: it is an elusive blade indeed.
Scarlette is one of the many in Europe whose sights are fixed on that sword, though her motives are unclear. It has quickly become clear, as she travels through Germany, that her ambition may be met with much more hostility than she had planned...
Heaven above, her head was pounding. And, on top of that, what little she had brought with her seemed to have gone missing after her skirmish with the lizardman.
She walked until she could see a small village on the horizon, letting out a sigh of relief. Her pace quickened; she could finally find out where she was. And perhaps, while she was at it, some more information on her objective.
It was early evening by the time she had made it into the small settlement, clearly exhausted. Stepping into a local tavern, she sat down at a table and rested her head against the wood.
"Merde," she mumbled under her breath, remembering that she had not a single coin to her name at present. "I'm not going to get much with no money..."

The tired traveler trudged passed a table where a young, exotic-looking girl sat. Her attire reflected a South-Asian style. Her pale skin, a color of which no human race has ever possessed, and her pointed ears further narrowed her homeland to one of the small island nations beyond India.
Her brown eyes followed the path of the weary red-haired female with some curiosity. She brushed aside black bangs, her silk sleeves rustling slightly in the process, then returned her gaze to her own tabletop, descending back down into her own deep, personal thoughts. Though she sat alone silently, she still had what could be presumed as company -- a giant of a human stood behind her, keeping watch.

The red-haired woman raised her head after a moment of stillness, and began scanning the room. The typical drunkards, shady, hooded thieves, over-eager women that draped themselves lewdly over only-slightly less eager men; all were present, but none would be of use.
Her eyes then settled on the younger girl, with what Scarlette could only call a monster of a man standing watch over her. She vaguely noted that she had passed them by on her way in, as she tucked a rebellious strand of hair over her ear.
The red-haired woman toyed with idea of moving to the idea of moving to the younger one's table, but her presence would most certainly not sit well with her protector. Still, any chance she had of gathering information, whether it be about wherever this place was or about the object of her interest, would work in her favor...
She steeled herself and rose to her feet once more, and walked back over to the girl and her giant, then cleared her throat and spoke politely.
"Begging your pardon, miss," she began, "but would you mind if I sat here and spoke with you?"

Doran strode forward one step at the woman's approach, but looked down at his charge before making any other moves. The young girl gave a single, succinct nod. Doran remained where he was, making no indication that he wished the new arrival to leave, but also not inviting her to sit yet.
"Kein Englisch. Sprechen Sie Deutsch?"

The larger man's tongue was vaguely familiar to her. Before she had left home, her adoptive parents had brought tutors to try to teach her Spanish, Italian, and various other languages; the only one that she had bothered to practice regularly, however, was English.
Oh, how she regretted not paying better attention to her teachers!
"Ich... Ich nicht... verstehe," she spoke nervously, despserately hoping that her broken response was at least somewhat correct.
Her expression shifted to one of disappointment. If she couldn't find a way to communicate with these two, she was essentially stuck.

A small smile played across her lips as she silently watched the difficult exchange between the two. It invoked within her a feeling of nostalgia. Still, they had hit a difficult barrier. Though her island nation traded freely with any who wished business, trade was usually only conducted on the mainland in India. Indeed, her previous life had been one of isolation. When He had rescued her, the world had opened up to a far more vast expanse than she could have imagined.
"जर्मनीदेश...कोई."
At first, she mumbled to herself. Then, she looked up at the scarlet-haired woman with a voice that was gentle and soothing.
"त्वम् संस्कृतं वदसि ? ...Française?"
Those were the only two tongues she could manage. The second was hardly formally taught to her, yet she could still probably manage better than with her hired guard and his guttural language. While not nearly as melodic as a native speaker, she had made much progress in those many years at her master's side. This was all she offered before falling silent once more, her brown eyes studying the one who had approached her table for either a response or a departure.

"त्वम् संस्कृतं वदसि ? ...Française?"
Whatever disappointment the older woman had felt was instantly replaced by surprise. Of all the things she expected the girl to speak, her native tongue was definitely not one.
It made her situation a bit easier, in any case.
"Oui, je parle français!" Her voice was much cheerier, now that the language barrier was eroded -- at least somewhat. "Je m'appelle Scarlette. Comment vous appellez-vous?"

Apologies for any horrible, horrible errors. I had to use InterTran/Google/various other internet resources.

As she switched languages, Doran stared down at his charge in mild bemusement. In the short matter of weeks since he had been hired, he hadn't heard her speak much at all, and what she had spoken had been in her original language--one which he did not recognize in the slightest. Traveling through Germany, he had handled all exchanges with locals. To hear her now speak French was completely unexpected--which simply served to remind him that he knew literally nothing about this girl he was to protect.
Still, apparently she could handle herself with this red-headed woman better than he himself could manage, and the stranger certainly didn't seem threatening (though outward appearances could often be deceiving). He shrugged and indicated the chair that the newcomer was standing beside, inviting her to sit as he stepped back to his original position.

"Oui, je parle français!...Je m'appelle Scarlette. Comment vous appellez-vous?"
The young girl flushed shyly at the sudden enthusiasm. She had brought this upon herself, of course, opening the door for a French conversation. Luckily the exchange for introductions tended to remain constant and predictable.
"O-oui. Je m'appelle Ede [ay-day]. Il est..."
She turned to address Doran, motioning for him to speak (she wanted his name to be known by its native pronunciation, not some foreign butchering).
"Du...name..."
She spoke slowly, not so that he could understand her, but because her mind was slowly processing the translation from her thoughts to this new language.
